With over 60 registered participants, the symposium on „Selected Topics on Strength, Vibration and Noise“ of the German Shipbuilding Society (STG) from March 12 to 13, 2024 was a great success. In addition to ten exciting lectures from various companies and universities, Nora Yazdandoost, Manager Acoustics at Geislinger, presented the latest progress in the simulation of structure-borne sound.

Products from Geislinger make an important contribution to the realization of the energy transition, especially in the context of green hydrogen technology. With over 370 participants the General Meeting of the German Shipbuilding Society (STG) from November 22 to 24, 2023, was a great success. As part of the event, Dr. Philipp Stuhlpfarrer, Head of Innovation at Geislinger, presented solutions to reduce vibrations as well as noise transmissions in the powertrain of ships.

In June, Geislinger had the opportunity to present its powertrain solutions for hybrid and electric marine propulsion systems to a wide audience at the European Electric & Hybrid Expo 2023 in Amsterdam. For the first time, Geislinger together with service partner ADS van Stigt was able to showcase their combined competences at a joint exhibition booth. Not only the exhibited products left an impression, but Thomas Winkler, Manager Hybrid Powertrain at Geislinger, gave in his presentation insights into the challenges and requirements for mechanical driveline components in hybrid and electric ship propulsion.

After a long break, the expert committee "Vibration and Noise" of the German Society for Maritime Technology (STG) finally met again in the DNV company building in Hamburg. In addition to DW-Ship Consult, the FH-Kiel and DNV, Geislinger contributed to the discourse. Nora Yazdandoost, Manager Acoustics at Geislinger, held a presentation about “Potential of structure-borne noise reduction by simulation-based design of couplings”.

Geislinger Digital Solutions has a new milestone to celebrate. After numerous installations and updates in 2022, the latest cooperation between Geislinger, its installation partner ADS van STIGT and the Swedish shipping company Stena Line represents the next stage of digital powertrain monitoring in the form of multiple engine monitoring.

Last year, in May, the third Torsional Vibration Symposium was held in Salzburg. One of the papers contributed by Geislinger was presented by Karina Windhofer, a specialist in the calculation of torsional vibrations. She explained the recent developments of simulations and measurements of torsional vibrations for torsional elastic couplings and how they were analyzed.

As demand for clean energy from renewable sources increases, wind energy is becoming an incomparably important player. While offshore wind farms are thriving, legislation and social acceptance of onshore wind power are proving to be difficult factors. As onshore turbines get larger, NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness), emanating mainly from the drivetrain, becomes a serious challenge.

With a focus on Geislinger Digital Solutions as well as customized solutions for innovative hybrid drives, Geislinger presented its latest product innovations that meet the challenges of the maritime industry at SMM 2022.

The MV Polar Pioneer was built in Finland 40 years ago. It is one of 10 Akademik Shuleykin-class ships built in the mid-1980s for the Soviet Union's oceanographic research purposes. Originally, the ship was an ice-strengthened research vessel with ice class 1A Super, suitable for navigation in polar regions with heavy sea ice. From the mid-1990s, about half of these very solid ships were used as chartered polar expedition vessels.

On June 22, 2022, Geislinger participated actively at the shipping companies meeting of the German Shipbuilding Society (STG). The event was held at the historic storage building “Schuppen 9” in Lübeck, Germany.

Increasingly complex electric and hybrid drive systems demand sophisticated solutions, such as the tailor-made coupling, damper and shaft solutions by Geislinger. On the road to hybridization, the shipping industry is facing new challenges every day. This is why our innovation department is constantly striving to develop breakthrough solutions for new hybrid powertrain requirements.

The third Torsional Vibration Symposium was held at Salzburg Congress from 11-13 May, 2022. Geislinger was the platinum sponsor of this event with about 200 participants from Europe, the United States, Canada and Asia. For most of the guests it was the first personal meeting after the long covid break.

After a two-year delay caused by the pandemic, the Geislinger Team is looking forward to personally attending the Torsional Vibration Symposium, May 11-13 in Salzburg. Our innovation specialists will participate with several presentations.

After successfully conducting a pilot installation on the MSC La Spezia (one of the vessels of the so called 'Italian Fleet' named after Italian cities), monitoring the Torsional Vibrations of the main propulsion with a MAN 2-stroke engine and implementing the Geislinger Analytics Platform, CPO Containerschiffreederei announced that they will proceed with the installation of Geislinger Mk6 along with the Digital Services on the rest of their fleet, which comprises 8 vessels.

Geislinger’s smart glasses, branded “Geislinger Smart Vision”, are the next step in digitalizing Geislinger’s Service Activities. In theory, “Geislinger Smart Vision” is like a head-mounted tablet and in practice, it allows Geislinger service engineers to access applications such as video calls with real-time video transmission, files & documents, and various browser-based solutions while keeping both hands free to work.

In August 2021, Geislinger was invited to participate in the session for underwater acoustics at the DAGA International Conference on Acoustics in Vienna.

Locomotives play an important role in transporting goods and support global trade. To ensure the timely delivery of goods, the US locomotives in particular need a reliable diesel-electric power system to power the locomotive. Geislinger has been a trusted industry leader in providing torsional dampers and couplings for locomotive applications.

On May 19th, 2021, the Torsional Vibration Symposium webinar was successfully held with over 400 online participants from more than 50 countries. During the Symposium, Dr. Klaus Prenninger, Head of the Torsional Vibration Calculation team at Geislinger, informed the audience about emission reduction strategies for large bore combustion engines. One important factor is the fuel itself. The new technologies applied in the developments to use different fuels can have massive impacts on torsional vibrations.

Geislinger’s Powertrain Solutions provide wind turbine manufacturers a significant advantage in the race for robustness, availability, and reliability.

For the purpose of illustrating the effectiveness of the gear integrated Geislinger Coupling, a 3D-multi-body simulation of the gear train of a combustion engine was carried out by the Austrian engineering heavyweight AVL on behalf of Geislinger. The pre-post study confirms that a Geislinger powertrain solution is effectively solving the problem at its origin, at the location of the excitations.

The combination of the new Geislinger GMSMk6 monitoring system and Geislinger Digital Services leads to the creation of an artificial supported analytics platform in order to enable maximum safety and reliability of your powertrain.

Talking about torsional vibrations, many people have just combustion engines in mind. However, when using reciprocating compressors, quite similar vibration issues apply.
